The Kettle Shed at The Cutty Sark
Our weeks just keep getting better and better with jam-packed stuff to help us understand tea that little bit better. This week we went to the Cutty Sark ship on King William Walk, London SE10 9HT. The ship was one of the pioneer’s in tea imports in the 1860’s. Cutty Sark is a British clipper ship. Built on the Clyde in 1869 for the Jock Willis Shipping Line, she was one of the last tea clippers to be built and one of the fastest, coming at the end of a long period of design development. The ship was one of the quickest and diverse ways to get tea from country…

Tea party cocktails
Here at The Kettle Shed we had the hard(ish) task of holding a tea party / tea tasting ‘do’…it’s a difficult job but someone had to do it… A few of us got together and agreed we needed to taste some delightful combinations of tea and alcoholic beverages. We decided it was the right thing to do as some of our customers make tea party cocktails and we didn’t know what they tasted like! As ambassadors for fine tea, we saw it as our duty to spend an evening drinking tea and alcohol, and here are the results of said evening! The cocktails we decided to try were bourbon whiskey…

Loose leaf lauded & teabags debunked
Interesting figures from The Guardian suggest that “we use about 55bn teabags in the UK each year – that’s about 370,000 tonnes of waste that mostly end up in landfill.” A troubling revelation, but one which contributes to the arguments for loose leaf tea over teabags just as much as superior flavour and quality. Not to mention the often-overlooked fact that preparing a loose leaf tea costs no significant extra effort. The Guardian blogger also points out that the persistently pervasive teabag is an American contrivance that has only been seen on our own sceptred isle since the Sixties and, therefore, the bag is not so deeply entrenched in our culture…
